Under general supervision and following established procedures,
prepares specimens of tissue for microscopic evaluation by a
physician in order to provide information on the functioning of
tissues and organs and other information relative to the cause and
progress of the disease. Prepares dyes and chemical solutions,
processes frozen sections, and performs other related duties as
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Obtains surgical specimens and orientates them on a supporting
medium according to a special diagram obtained from the
- Places the specimen in a cryostat and cuts extremely thin
sections and mounts sections on glass slides.
- Stains the microscopic slide and covers with a resin and cover
glass for protection and preservation of the tissue specimen.
- Maintains files on slides by the patients chemosurgery or
biopsy number, name, medical record number, diagnosis, and the
location of patients slide in the file.
- Decalcifies bone specimens and processes bone marrow
- Responsible for the maintenance and orderly condition of
assigned equipment, instrument, and work area.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Completion of accredited Bachelors Degree program in chemical,
physical, biological science, medical technology or clinical
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
as a histotechnologist, preferred.
- At least one (1) year of supervised training in a clinical
laboratory in histologic techniques to perform tissue staining
procedures and the processing of bone marrow specimens
Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less. Depth
Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to
perform job functions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Regularly exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens,
organs and tissues.
- Regular exposure to electrical equipment, chemicals, odors,
changing temperatures, and frequent interruptions.
- May handle absentee replacement on short notice.
- May require prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to
lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
- Eye and face protection, gown, lab coat, apron, mask,
non-sterile medical gloves and utility gloves as required by task
